The Children’s Situation

Many hilltribe villages are situated in the jungle of the dangerous triangle formed by the three countries Thailand-Burma-Laos, well-known as the legendary drug region of “the Golden Triangle”. In the north of Burma, there has been a merciless civil war going on for many years. Therefore, most of the hilltribe villages are hardly able to survive, and more and more children suffer from hunger and misery that keep spreading very fast.

In order to survive, the children have to work in garbage dumps, or they have to beg for money in the streets. Some of them are used as drug carriers or dealers force them to work as prostitutes. There are others who also work as child-soldiers. In the night, they sleep in the streets. In order to escape from this misery for a short time they start sniffing glue, which often means that they make the first step leading them to a career in drug business they cannot escape from. Because of their bad hygienic surroundings the children have to suffer from various contagious diseases.

Most of the hilltribe villages are miles away from the nearest school, and to get there you have to walk along dangerous and strenuous trails through the jungle. Many children of the hilltribe villages cannot go to school because their families are very poor. They cannot afford to pay the costs necessary for going to school, that means among others the money for transport to school, for school uniforms, books and educational material, and school fees.

Because of this, the children of the poorest families are deprived of any education and have no hope at all for a better future.

How we help

The staff of Hope for Life regularly visit the hilltribe villages in order to select the families and children in need. They regard it as extremely important that the parents recognize the importance an adequate education at school has for the future of their children so that as a consequence they will do their very best to support them to achieve this.

Together with the families we discuss the problems which prevent the children from attending school. Like this, our staff becomes familiar with the individual situation of the respective families and children. On the basis of this insight, Hope for Life supports the families by offering them help and advice and by paying the costs arising from the children’s regular school attendance.

Our staff then regularly visit the families we support in order to keep informed on the progress made in the children’s development. This implies an evaluation of both the children’s achievements at school and their social surroundings.

3. Information of the families (to prevent child abuse)
